Picking At The Bone

January 6th - January 28th

Closing reception: January 28th

Hours: Thurs-Sun from 12-8pm

The Catskills is ringing in the new year with Picking At The Bone, a debut solo exhibition of recent works by John Fleming. The show consists of five mid-sized and large abstract paintings. Fleming's smooth surfaces are composed of acrylic glazes and washes that contrast with scratches and ghostly remains of sanded down gestural passages. The result is an optical and textural vibration between these various layers of history and time. This vibration is heightened by the palette, which ranges from the cool grays and earth tones of fundamental layers to more saturated surface layers. As the title Picking At The Bone suggests, the artist engages in a painterly archeology of past and paint (a reference to science and nourishment), an urge to preserve the past as well as integrate its lessons into a self-aware system.

Born in Queens, New York in 1988, John Fleming, graduated with a BFA from Hunter College in 2016. Recent New York exhibitions at Underdonk and Calico gallery led up to the production of work for Fleming's first New York Solo Show.
